Catalyst

Last Thursday Fiona and I helped out two of our tutors with a launch they were having. Dalziel + Scullion were launching a new public art work in the Greenmarket area of Dundee – their concrete car! The project is entitled Catalyst and it is a sculpture of a car, draped in cloth, made out of a concrete that absorbs the polluted air, reacts with it, and breathes out clean air. Have a look at the website for a proper explanation and images. It looks amazing, and the whiteness of the concrete gives it an intriguing quality, partly because the associations of the colour white do not normally go with cars, dirty beasts of metal that they are! The site itself is next to a multi-storey car park. It is just such a cool concept, and a concrete that can clean air is fantastic. I am a big fan of their work, drawn to it as it is often concerned with ecological issues. It is wonderful to have them as tutors, and they also agreed to have me for my 4 day professional practice placement that we have to do in third year. It was great to spend time with them, and just be in their studio. It’s also great just to see professional artists, well, being artists! I found the placement in that sense really useful, and also the launch night. It was good seeing all these things that happen “behind the scenes”.

Anyhow, I stupidly forgot to take my camera with me on Thursday so I will need to return one day soon to get some photos.
