Artist Talks – Gina Wall & Paul Reid

Louise wants me to update so thought I had better ;) Since it has been a couple of weeks since I have updated I’m trying to remember what I have been doing, but all my weeks have merged into one. It does not feel that long ago that I was starting my third year and saying to myself I had plenty time until Christmas. Now our first assessment is two weeks away!

I’ve been to a couple of artists talks in the time since I last posted. The first was one that is organised by the Art & Philosophy department, but anyone can go to. This one was by Gina Wall. It was quite interesting, although a little heavy on the philosophy side of things (which I was expecting, being an art & philosophy talk), but yes, it was related to photography and seeing the land as text, reading the photographs, etc. Her photographs themselves were beautiful, something really serene and oddly haunting.

The second talk was organised to coincide with an exhibition in the Tower Fower of the artist Paul Reid. If you click that link you will see how amazing his paintings are, just breathtaking in terms of skill and I personally love the mythological themes in his work. It is always nice to have an artist talk about their work, to hear their side of what they do, how they do it and what they are trying to achieve. The only thing which was a negative was the location, the number of people who seemed incapable of acknowledging that a talk of some sort was going on and shutting up was one too many – extremely annoying!
